Hyderabad Hit by 280 mm Rain in 24 Hours, Causing Widespread Flooding
Hyderabad experienced a massive 280 mm of rainfall within just 24 hours, marking one of the heaviest downpours in the city’s recent memory. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Latifabad was the hardest-hit area during this torrential spell.
Citywide Flooding and Disruptions
The relentless rain resulted in severe urban flooding, submerging roads and turning entire neighborhoods into water channels. In Latifabad, transportation came to a standstill as roads were completely inundated. Other areas such as City Taluka, Qasimabad, and Rural Taluka also faced heavy flooding, leading to infrastructure damage and widespread disruption to daily life.
Karachi Also Severely Affected
Karachi wasn’t spared either — the city experienced intense rainfall that led to heavy waterlogging across key areas. Major roads like M.A. Jinnah Road and Nagan Chowrangi were submerged, causing massive traffic jams. Commuters were stranded for hours as vehicles stalled in the flooded streets.
Emergency Declared, Relief Efforts Underway
In response, local authorities declared a state of emergency in flood-prone neighborhoods, particularly in low-lying areas like Lassi Goth, where water entered homes and displaced residents. Many families had to evacuate their houses as floodwaters damaged personal belongings.
Rescue and relief teams, along with local administration, worked continuously to drain water from streets and manage traffic. However, the sheer volume of rain presented significant challenges for these efforts.
Call for Long-Term Solutions
Experts are urging immediate improvements to urban infrastructure, especially drainage systems, warning that without effective planning, such extreme weather will continue to cause large-scale disruption. The recent deluge is a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustainable urban resilience strategies.
