OpenAI Introduces Free ChatGPT for Teachers

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teachers, a free AI tool specifically designed for K–12 educators. Verified school staff can access the service at no cost until June 2027.

This platform is intended to help teachers create lesson plans, assignments, and other educational resources, while providing a safe environment to explore AI applications in the classroom.

The teacher-focused version includes all the features of the standard ChatGPT, such as GPT-5.1 Auto, file uploads, image generation, memory tools, and app integrations. However, it is tailored for schools, ensuring compliance with FERPA regulations to protect student data.

Educators can also collaborate by sharing chats with colleagues, making it easier to exchange teaching ideas and resources.

OpenAI’s initiative is part of a broader effort to expand into the education sector. By offering a secure, dedicated AI assistant for teachers, the company aims to support schools in adopting new technologies and enhancing teaching efficiency.

Early feedback indicates that the tool can save teachers considerable planning time, allow for more personalized learning experiences, and encourage creative classroom activities.

With this launch, OpenAI positions ChatGPT not just as a general AI assistant but as a practical tool for educational professionals, helping teachers integrate AI into their daily routines while maintaining safety and privacy standards.

This initiative has the potential to transform lesson planning and student engagement in schools in the years ahead.
